Giacomo Tachis

The story of Giacomo Tachis is compelling and fascinating, full of success that is beyond all doubt, have not arrived by chance or benevolent fate. Man of deep wine knowledge and wine, Giacomo Tachis is also profound scholar and expert on the history of wine and our territory. A fascinating story of his life and his amazing career as winemaker and wine man, is reported in his autobiography Knowing Wine, a book that I recommend to everyone to read. A book full of information and winemaking philosophy, also has a significant vision of the history of Italian wine in the last fifty years. Here, Giacomo Tachis tells his collaboration with the great French wine Émyle Peynaud, one of the undisputed fathers of modern oenology, which – without a doubt – is also counted Giacomo Tachis.
Graduated in 1954 from the famous Wine School of Alba, Giacomo Tachis is one of the few characters to have witnessed the rebirth and revival of Italian wine, not only as a spectator, but mostly as an actor undisputed and fundamental. In 1961 the basic step which will initiate his successful career and, with this, the beginning of the modern history of Italian wine. It all begins in Tuscany, a region in which James Tachis understood that Italian wine was certainly able to get out of his long sleep of mediocrity and challenge the world. Challenge the world and win. So it was, and the results were not slow in coming: in about ten years, the great Piemontese winemaker from birth to great wines of quality and class, quality, above. A global success, Super Tuscans wines defined by the foreign press, they were so different and distant from what Tuscany was producing at the time. Make a list of wines produced by the inspiration and deep knowledge of Giacomo Tachis would be useless and certainly repetitive, “children” so well known in Italy and in the world that everyone knows and remembers. (Sassicaia, Tignanello, San Leonado, Sammarco, D’Alceo, Turriga etc …)
Accomplices, perhaps, also the new demands of the market – who demanded wines other than those that were produced in Italy at the time – Giacomo Tachis was still achieved his goal: to show that you could do quality wine. It showed, first, that it was possible, that you could produce something unique and great with what our territory already knew offer. Simple how to listen, understand and learn, using science and technology wisely and consciously, without trampling on the dignity and character of grapes and territories. Giacomo Tachis initiated a change that has the flavor of revolution, transforming the Italian wine in a radical way and without return. Tachis is a man of big business, with a keen interest in history and archeology, as in the case of rare wine “Mothya”, produced in small Phoenician island of Mozia, Sicily. Eighty years, of which fifty dedicated to wine and the pleasure of us fans. Thanks Maestro Giacomo Tachis, thanks for what you taught us and for all the emotions that poured in our glasses.
